In 2024, 4sfera engaged with the technicians from the city of Terrassa to participate in the piloting of Clean@AirSchool within schools in the city. The initiative was taken up by 7 schools in the city, involving more than 350 students.

This activity has allowed students to monitor the air quality in their respective school and immediate surroundings. Students have evaluated their exposure to an atmospheric pollutant, such as nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The educational centers will use the results to work during this course on the issue of air pollution and possible changes in habits.

The participating schools (Lumen; Salvador Vinyals and Galí; Mare de Déu de Montserrat; Andersen; Font de l’Alba; Ramon Pont and Petit Estel-La Nova) are in different neighbourhoods of the city. This has allowed to gather data across different locations across a wide part of the municipal area. Students and teachers have analysed for a month the concentrations of nitrogen dioxide collected in the 128 locations installed at different points inside and outside the educational centres

In cities, the main source of NO2 emission comes from fossil fuel vehicles.

Currently, the annual limit set by the European directive is 40 ug/m³. As a result of the study carried out as part of this project in Terrassa, NO2 concentrations range between 7 and 39 μg/m3, with an average of 20.4 μg/m3.

Overall, CleanAir@School has been piloted in over 60 schools, engaging a significant number of students and teachers. It is estimated that more than 1,000 individuals, including both students and teachers, participated. Specifically, piloting activities took place in various Catalan cities such as Girona, Barcelona, Terrassa, and Vic, along with several schools in Basauri-Etxebarri-Galdakao, Madrid, and a secondary school in Galicia. Outside of Spain, piloting extended to Athens (Greece), Rome (Italy), Novi Sad (Serbia), numerous schools in Romania, and Copenhagen (Denmark). This demonstrates the project’s extensive cross-border collaboration and diverse geographical reach.
