Participating in the Youth Assembly in Person Meeting in Barcelona
A Beautiful Setting for a Vital Conversation
Sofia Quadrini, a youth design assembly participant – 18th of October 2023
The bustling streets of Barcelona were filled with energy as I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Youth Assembly’s in-person meeting in Barcelona, Spain. It was an unforgettable experience that not only allowed me to explore the enchanting city but also provided a platform to delve into pressing global issues, particularly pollution, and connect with like-minded young individuals from all corners of Europe.
Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, is not only famous for its breathtaking architecture, lively street life, and rich culture but also for its commitment to sustainability and environmental awareness. The very backdrop of this city, which is a testament to human creativity, served as a reminder of the importance of preserving our environment. Walking through the streets and parks, I couldn’t help but reflect on the need to protect the beauty that surrounds us and how our actions impact the environment.
Learning About Pollution and Its Consequences
The heart of the assembly was our collective commitment to address the global menace of pollution. Throughout the Youth Assembly, we engaged in eye-opening discussions, workshops, and presentations that shed light on the various facets of pollution, from air and water pollution to waste management and its impact on our planet and health. Experts from clean air at schools shared their knowledge and insights, helping us to understand the magnitude of the problem and its far-reaching consequences.
Exploring Solutions and Measures
Barcelona itself served as an inspiring case study of a city committed to addressing pollution. We had the opportunity to test out an app designed by green air at schools which hopes to spread more awareness and get students actively involved in tackling pollution. We placed air filter tubes in different strategical areas that will later be collected to measure the air pollution throughout the city. While we walked around, we witnessed various eco-friendly measures, from efficient public transportation systems to pedestrian zones and waste-collection strategies. Barcelona showcased a real commitment to improving it’s sustainability.
Meeting Peers with a Common Purpose
One of the most rewarding aspects of the Youth Assembly was the chance to connect with young people from all over Europe. We represented diverse backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives, but we shared a common purpose: to make a positive impact on our planet. Sharing experiences, challenges, and innovative solutions from our respective regions allowed us to gain a broader understanding of the environmental landscape in Europe. I believe this reinforced the notion that change is possible when we unite for a common cause.
In Conclusion
If you ever get the chance to participate in a similar event or visit a city like Barcelona, I wholeheartedly encourage you to seize the opportunity. It’s a chance to not only learn and grow but also to connect with like-minded individuals who share your passion for making a difference in the world. For me, this first Youth Assembly experience was a reminder of what is possible when young people come together to address the challenges of our time and was an eye-opening and inspirational journey.
